Evaporator Freeze Protection Trip — Safety Shutdown
A field reference for evaporator faults — what causes it, how to confirm it on the unit, how to repair it, and what fails next if you leave it. Written for working HVAC & refrigeration technicians.
How to confirm it on site
- Freeze stat trip indication
- Water in/out temp — outlet near 0°C
- Flow meter below rated
- Evap temp abnormally low (<-10°C)
- Check refrigerant charge
- Glycol concentration — refractometer
- Ambient temperature
Root causes
- Low water flow — pump, strainer, closed valve
- Refrigerant overcharge → evap temp ↓
- TXV overfeeding → liquid + evap temp ↓
- Freeze stat setpoint too high — trips during normal
- Glycol concentration too low → freezing point ↑
- Very low ambient — natural freezing
If you leave it unrepaired
- Freeze stat trips → compressor stops
- If not reset: no operation
- Root cause unknown: repeated trips → cycling
- Shell-and-tube evap: tube break risk if stat doesn't trip
- Zero cooling — secondary damage
How to fix it
- Restore water flow — pump/strainer/valve
- Recover overcharge
- Adjust TXV superheat to 4–8°C
- Review freeze stat setpoint (outlet -2 to +2°C)
- Check glycol concentration
- Prevention: flow monitoring + periodic freeze stat test
