Abnormally Low Discharge (High-Side) Pressure — Diagnosis & Response
Likely causes
Refrigerant undercharge — leak or insufficient initial charge
Check: Both high and low pressures low + bubbles in sight glass + very high superheat (>20°C) + subcooling 0–3°C → confirmed undercharge. Partial frosting/sweating on suction line is the same signal.
What to do: 1) Leak check — electronic detector + soap. 2) On finding leak: recover → repair → evacuate 30 min → recharge by weight. 3) No leak found → undercharge from initial — top up to nameplate amount (preferably full recovery and recharge). 4) For small leaks not immediately fixable, short-term top-up acceptable but schedule prompt repair.
Compressor discharge valve wear — pumping efficiency loss
Check: Low high-side + low-side normal or slightly elevated = suspect insufficient compressor pumping. Pumpdown test — close liquid-line solenoid; if low-side cannot reach ≤0.05 MPa(g), valve leak confirmed.
What to do: 1) Semi-hermetic — disassemble head and replace discharge reed valves. 2) Hermetic — only option is full compressor replacement. 3) On replacement: full system vacuum/clean (remove debris from prior compressor wear) + replace filter-drier. 4) During start-up, monitor suction/discharge pressure and current.
Very low ambient temperature — natural condensing pressure drop (not a fault)
Check: Below 5°C ambient, condensing pressure 50% below normal makes cooling nearly impossible — standard ACs are not specified for operation below 5°C ambient. Excessively low pressure causes liquid-line undersupply, leading to TXV malfunction (with concurrent low suction pressure).
What to do: 1) Enable low-ambient kit if installed — controls condenser fan speed. 2) Variable-speed or cycling condenser fan to hold condensing pressure. 3) Add head-pressure control valve (e.g., Sporlan Headmaster). 4) Without variable-speed option, advise customer not to operate below 5°C ambient.
Low discharge diagnostic order: ambient temp → charge/leak → compressor pumping. Compressor disassembly is last resort — verify with pumpdown test before opening.
