Air-Cooled Chiller High-Temperature Trip (Ambient >45°C)
Likely causes
Condenser coil fins clogged with dust/debris — reduced airflow
Check: Hold hand in front of coil — if airflow pressure feels weak, immediate cleaning needed. Check high-side gauge: exceeded if R-410A >2.8 MPa, R-134a >1.6 MPa, R-22 >2.0 MPa
What to do: Back-flush with high pressure water ≤15°C — at least weekly during summer. Restore bent fins with fin comb. Use coil cleaner for severe cases
Condenser fan motor overheated and stopped
Check: Measure fan motor current — overloaded if >110% of rated. Confirm all fans rotate normally (even one stopped fan causes rapid pressure rise). Check bearing noise and heat
What to do: Replace fan motor (if >110% of rated current). Lubricate or replace bearings. Verify fan speed controller settings for thermal and load management
Hot air recirculation — discharged air re-enters intake side
Check: Measure intake air temperature — recirculation confirmed if 3°C+ above ambient. Check gap between discharge and intake sides (minimum 1.5 m recommended)
What to do: Install recirculation-prevention baffle (air guide). Install shade/heat shield to block direct sunlight (reduces ambient 3–5°C). Adjust to night operation hours to distribute load
Check fin blockage by holding hand in front of coil — must feel airflow pressure. If weak, clean immediately. Weekly cleaning in summer is key to preventing trips. Trip setpoints: R-410A 2.8 MPa, R-134a 1.6 MPa, R-22 2.0 MPa.
