Coil Cleaning Chemical Safety — Neutral / Alkaline / Acidic Selection

Choose cleaner by contamination type

Check: **LG/Samsung manuals recommend**: **neutral detergents** (wool shampoo, dish soap) are safest. **Alkaline/acidic cleaners risk aluminum fin corrosion**. **By contamination**: ① general dust/mold = neutral or alkaline (pH 9–11) coil cleaner. ② sand storm/salt/metal oxidation = acidic (pH 2–4, strong but corrosive). ③ grease (restaurants/factories) = strong alkaline. **Aluminum-fin corrosion risk**: bleach (sodium hypochlorite), vinegar (acetic acid), thinner, kerosene = forbidden. **Personal safety**: inhaling chemicals causes irritation/breathing difficulty/nausea. Mask and rubber gloves mandatory.

What to do: **Cleaning procedure**: 1) Power OFF + breaker OFF + LOTO. 2) Wear mask, rubber gloves, safety glasses. 3) Spray suitable cleaner (per maker's recommended concentration). 4) Dwell 5–10 min. 5) Rinse 2–3 times with clean water (low-pressure spray, never high-pressure = fin damage). 6) Drain condensate fully. 7) Run blower 30 min–1 hr to fully dry (prevents mold/corrosion). **Advise leaving the room right after cleaning** = avoid breathing residual chemical vapor. **Don't let users DIY** = bleach mishaps are common (similar to Korean humidifier-disinfectant cases).

Field tip

**Field trick**: Korea is very sensitive to chemical cleaners since the 2016 humidifier-disinfectant scandal. Show users the chemical type and MSDS before use. **Some AC cleaners cause respiratory irritation/bronchial damage**. Use eco/neutral/certified products. **Systems 5+ years old** = avoid alkaline/acidic to prevent coil damage. R-32 new systems have hydrophilic coil coating = acidic cleaning damages coating.
