Compressor Short Cycling — Rapid ON/OFF Repetition

Likely causes

High-pressure (HP) switch repeated trip — condensing pressure exceeds limit

Check: Compressor stops 1–3 min after start → pressure drops slightly → restarts → stops again. Measure pressure at trip with manifold → confirm HP setpoint reached. Check the 4 causes in discharge-high case simultaneously.

What to do: 1) Verify HP switch setpoint (normal: refrigerant-rated value + ~0.3 MPa safety margin). 2) Differential too small accelerates cycling — adjust to ≥0.5 MPa. 3) Resolve root cause (high condensing pressure) using discharge-high case. 4) Repeated short cycling cuts compressor life to 1/3 or less — act immediately.

Low-pressure (LP) switch repeated trip — suction pressure below limit

Check: Stops 5–30 sec after start. Confirm LP setpoint (typically 0.1–0.2 MPa) is being reached. #1 cause = undercharge; #2 = evaporator blockage (filter/coil/solenoid); #3 = TXV restriction.

What to do: 1) Undercharge → resolve via subcooling-zero / discharge-low case. 2) Frozen evaporator coil → stop system, allow natural defrost (or activate defrost cycle). 3) Inspect solenoid valve coil for open or sticking — measure coil resistance, lightly tap with hammer to check movement. 4) Never arbitrarily lower LP setpoint — risks compressor liquid slugging.

Thermostat differential too narrow — setpoint deadband too small

Check: Run 1–3 min → OFF 1–2 min → ON cycle repeats all day. Check thermostat setpoint and differential — under 1°C is too small. Digital thermostats label this as 'Differential' or 'Hysteresis' in settings.

What to do: 1) Adjust differential to 2–3°C (1.5°C for precision food storage). 2) If mechanical thermostat is too sensitive, replace with digital. 3) Inspect thermostat location — drafts/heat sources nearby cause false signals. 4) Ensure minimum run time of 3–5 min under low load — use compressor protection controller.

Anti-short-cycle timer (ASCT) not active — protection circuit fault

Check: Normally, compressor must wait 3–5 min after OFF before restart. Immediate restart indicates ASCT failure. Inspect controller or standalone module (e.g., ICM series). Verify timer output signal with multimeter.

What to do: 1) Replace ASCT module — cheap ($30–50) but protects $500–2000 compressor. 2) Update controller firmware — some faults fixed by patch. 3) For older systems without ASCT, install standalone module. 4) Short cycling for 24+ hours risks compressor winding damage — stop immediately.

Short cycling is a compressor killer. Over 6 ON/OFF cycles per hour requires immediate action. Log HP/LP switch trip frequency via controller log or data logger to speed root cause tracing.
