Condenser Fan Short Cycling — Intentional vs Faulty Operation
Likely causes
Intentional fan cycling — maintaining condensing pressure in low ambient
Check: Below 15°C ambient, fan ON/OFF in 1–3 min cycles is normal (head-pressure control). Verify with manifold — pre-Fan-ON pressure X MPa, pre-Fan-OFF X+0.3 MPa = intentional.
What to do: 1) If normal, no action needed — explain to customer. 2) If cycles too fast (<30 sec), increase differential or upgrade to VFD motor. 3) Fan cycling must be independent of compressor cycling — compressor runs continuously while only the fan cycles.
Fan motor thermal overload repeatedly trips — sign of motor winding damage
Check: Fan runs 5–10 min then stops → motor very hot to touch (>80°C) → restarts automatically after 5–15 min cooling. Megger insulation: <1MΩ = winding damage. Measure run current: within ±10% of rated is normal.
What to do: 1) Replace motor (insulation damage is non-repairable). 2) Match HP/RPM/voltage of replacement to original. 3) Check fan blade balance and bearing condition simultaneously. 4) In hot/poorly ventilated locations (factory rooftops), upsize motor or add forced ventilation.
First question to distinguish fan cycling vs fault: 'What is the ambient temp?' Above 25°C ambient, fan cycling is almost always a fault. Below 15°C it's likely intentional.
