Discharge pressure pulsation — root causes and muffler/accumulator diagnostics
Likely causes
Why discharge pulsation occurs — normal vs abnormal
Check: Principle: Reciprocating compressors discharge once per cycle → pulsation is inherent. Mufflers, check valves, head gaskets, discharge accumulators absorb it. Normal: manifold needle wobbles smoothly within ±0.5 bar of mean discharge. Abnormal: swings >±1.5 bar with sharp 'tap-tap' needle motion + visible discharge-line vibration/noise. Scroll compressors normally show very little pulsation, so large swings imply a fault.
What to do: Measurement tools: a digital manifold with fast sampling and graphing is recommended — analog needles can't show ±0.5 bar fine motion clearly. A vibration meter clamped to the discharge line is a useful auxiliary. When abnormal pulsation is found, proceed to the next cause (muffler / check valve / valve plate).
Aged discharge muffler + leaking check valve + cracked valve plate — narrowing the fault
Check: Separate by symptoms: ① Muffler only aged: large pulsation right after the compressor outlet, decreasing as you go downstream past the muffler. Muffler shell vibrates strongly to the touch; normal mufflers damp by their outlet. ② Check valve leakage: with compressor OFF, discharge gauge pressure rises for 1–2 min before decreasing (reverse flow + equalization). Normally equalization begins immediately. ③ Cracked valve plate: compressor shell vibration and noise are large + abnormally low compression ratio + discharge line very hot (overheated gas + cylinder leakage reheating the suction side).
What to do: Fix: ① Aged muffler → replace it as a stand-alone part if the system allows; if integrated into the compressor, consider an aftermarket discharge muffler installed externally. ② Check valve leakage → if external, replace standalone; if integrated, replace the compressor. Temporary: equalization shock on stop can damage inverters/relays — protect with anti-short-cycle timer. ③ Cracked valve plate → on serviceable models replace valve plate + gasket + reed valve set; on hermetic units (scroll, rotary, small reciprocating) replace the compressor. ④ Muffler wear from system vibration → add vibration mounts + reinforce discharge line bends.
Treating discharge pulsation as a mere 'noise issue' lets it propagate cracks and vibration through muffler → discharge line → condenser inlet. Left more than a year, discharge weld cracks and condenser-fin vibration wear can develop. Diagnose and repair as soon as found.
