Duct Leakage Exceeding 15% → Reduced Delivered Capacity

Likely causes

Duct joint tape peeling — aluminum tape adhesion weakened in high-temperature/humid environment

Check: Compare fan rated airflow (m³/h) against sum of measured discharge grille airflows — difference ≥15% suspects leakage. Inject smoke via smoke pencil inside duct and locate leakage around joints

What to do: Fully remove existing tape → re-apply UL 181B-certified aluminum foil tape (confirm compression) → add duct hangers at 1.5 m intervals on horizontal runs → after repair, re-measure CFM per discharge grille (within ±10% of design)

Flexible duct excessively kinked — internal liner damaged, causing leakage

Check: Visually inspect flexible duct inside ceiling — locate sections bent with radius less than 1.5× duct diameter. Manually straighten kinked area to detect internal liner damage

What to do: Replace kinked flexible duct sections — reinstall with bend radius ≥1.5× duct diameter → add hangers to prevent sagging under self-weight

Field tip

Measure CFM at each discharge grille with anemometer and compare to fan rated airflow — if total difference ≥15%, immediately inspect for duct leakage. Annual check recommended.
