Flammable refrigerants (R-32, R-454B, R-1234yf, R-290) — A2L/A3 classes, handling safety, recovery, work rules

Likely causes

Classification and hazard — A1 vs A2L vs A2 vs A3

Check: ASHRAE 34 classification: ① A1 — non-toxic, non-flammable. R-22, R-410A, R-134a, etc. ② A2L — non-toxic, mildly flammable (burn velocity ≤10 cm/s). R-32, R-454B, R-1234yf. High ignition energy and slow flame propagation. ③ A2 — non-toxic, moderately flammable. Rarely used. ④ A3 — non-toxic, highly flammable. R-290 (propane), R-600a (isobutane). Very low ignition energy. Hazard differences: A1 won't ignite when leaked. A2L is hard to ignite at typical leak concentrations, but in confined spaces with a strong ignition source (a welding torch) it can. A3 leaks pool inside cabinets and can ignite from a tiny spark (light switch, static). The nameplate must show the charge gas — verify it before any work.

What to do: Work rules — flammable refrigerants: ① Ventilation — natural plus forced (fan) during work. Do NOT work in confined spaces (small garages, closed rooms). ② Cut ignition sources — no smoking, keep phones/radios ≥1 m, move welding torches to a separate area. Prevent static (grounded mat and clothing). ③ Leak detector — use a flammable-compatible model (IR or semiconductor). It should alarm at 25% of the LFL (lower flammable limit). ④ Recovery — dedicated flammable-rated recovery machine and tank. Standard machines are NOT for flammables (internal sparks). ⑤ Charging — liquid charging from the can is mandatory; vapor charging is an explosion hazard (glide blends like R-454B require liquid anyway). Tech certification — EU (F-Gas), US (EPA 609 for MVAC), Australia (ARC) and others require region-specific licensing.

Emergency response — leak or ignition

Check: On finding a leak — immediately: ① Stop the system and cut all power at the main breaker. If the system is already running, leave it and cut power from a remote switch (switching can be an ignition source). ② Move workers away — avoid inhalation, run ventilation (built-in fan or portable). ③ Isolate ignition sources — kill electrical, torches, phones within 1.5 m. ④ Locate the leak with a flammable-compatible detector (acetamine leak fluid is NOT for flammables — ignition risk). ⑤ After 30+ min of ventilation, resume work. On ignition: ① Workers retreat immediately, call emergency services (119 / local). ② If feasible, use a dry powder (ABC) extinguisher. R-32/R-454B flames are small and extinguishable, R-290 produces a larger flame and is harder to extinguish. ③ NEVER use water — the gas can re-condense and re-vaporize, spreading the flame.

What to do: Prevention and personal protection: ① Always wear PPE for flammable work — cotton coveralls (synthetic fabrics carry static), safety goggles, insulated gloves. ② Verify gas type before starting — system nameplate + identifier. ③ Carry a portable flammable-gas detector during work (turn it on at start; alarm at 25% LFL). ④ Mandatory post-work leak check — at the worked area and system-wide. ⑤ Do NOT store flammable cans inside a vehicle — sun and heat raise pressure and risk explosion. Use a separate ventilated store. ⑥ Personal insurance and records — flammable-refrigerant accidents are not minor; fatalities are possible. Log work date/time, ventilation status, and detector photos in the R-Pro inspection card as a liability shield.

Field tip

Next-gen refrigerant trend — between 2025–2030, R-410A and R-22 use is being phased down; R-32, R-454B, R-1234yf are taking over. Flammable refrigerants will soon be 'everyday' rather than 'special'. The technician's ability to work with flammables ties directly to long-term business stability.
