Heat Pump 4-Way Valve Stuck — Mode Switch Fails (Samsung E311–E320)

Likely causes

Identify stuck type (coil, pilot, main slide)

Check: **Field diagnostic order**: 1) PCB force mode swap → check coil for 'click' sound and vibration (coil OK). 2) No click = open coil or no PCB signal. Coil resistance 1.5–3 kΩ (per manual). 3) Coil OK but no mode change = pilot or main slide stuck. 4) Insufficient pressure differential (switch right after system stops) = slide stuck in position. Samsung E311/E312/E313/E314 = 4-way signal fault. LG codes per manual.

What to do: **Coil only**: detach and replace coil (keep body). Residential coil KRW 50–150k. **Body stuck emergency**: with system running and high/low pressure differential established, repeat forced signal to coil + repeat forced mode-swap command (pressure differential frees stuck slide). 50–70% success. If still stuck, body replacement required. **Permanent body stuck**: recover → cut out and replace body (4 brazed joints + new body + vacuum + recharge). Residential body KRW 300–600k. Within warranty (7–10 yr) = free.

Field tip

**Field trick**: 4-way valve body sticking is most common at seasonal transitions (winter→spring or summer→fall) after 5–6 month dormancy. Pre-season forced mode swap = preventive maintenance. **Repeated forced mode-swap emergency** = informal method many Korean/Japanese/Chinese techs use. Not in manuals but works because pressure differential frees the stuck slide. Success 50–70%. **R-32 systems** = A2L flammable, anti-static precautions required when probing coil signals.
