Insufficient Drain Slope or Reverse Slope — Gravity Drainage Fails

Likely causes

Slope below standard — recommended ≥1 cm per 1 m (1% slope)

Check: Use level along drain line — minimum 1 cm drop per 1 m length. Mark flat or upward (reverse) sections. Longer lines need cumulative larger slope.

What to do: 1) For ceiling-suspended systems, adjust hanger length to create slope. 2) Embedded lines may require partial re-installation. 3) Where slope is impractical, use condensate pump for forced drainage. 4) For new installations, recommend 2 cm per 1 m (2% slope) — provides margin.

Line sagging — deforms over time, water pools mid-line

Check: PVC and soft PE pipes sag after 5–10 years. Run hand along line to find sagging — water accumulates causing blockage effect. Sun-exposed sections deform faster.

What to do: 1) Support sagging section with new hanger — recommend hanger every 1 m. 2) Severe sag → cut and replace section with new straight pipe. 3) Use rigid PVC (Schedule 40 or higher). 4) Outdoor exposure → UV-blocking sleeve or insulation wrap.

Field tip

Slope defects are an installation responsibility — when found, review installation report/contract terms. Original installer may be obligated to fix. Self-correction usually works only for minor adjustments; major fixes require re-installation.
