R-22 System Retrofit to R-407C / R-422D Alternatives
Likely causes
R-22 phase-out and alternative selection
Check: Korea = R-22 completely banned for new use by 2030 + existing systems should retrofit. Alternatives: R-407C (common residential), R-422D (oil-compatible, low pressure shift), R-438A. Compressor oil compatibility: R-22 = mineral / alternatives = POE synthetic → oil change required. Verify pressure rating (R-410A NOT compatible with R-22 systems).
What to do: Recover R-22 (EPA 608 certified) → check system cleanliness (acid/moisture) → swap mineral oil → POE synthetic. Charge new refrigerant by weight (R-407C/R-422D/R-438A). Label nameplate with retrofit + new refrigerant. No warranty. For aged systems, recommend new R-32 install instead.
Retrofit = 50–70% of new install cost but no warranty. If system aged = recommend new install (R-32). Korean industrial/commercial = retrofit aggressively. Residential = depends on age.
