Short cycling — aged thermostat or chattering contacts
Likely causes
Mechanical thermostat — oxidized contacts and chattering
Check: Measure: ① Use multimeter resistance mode at the thermostat output terminals. Normal: stable 0Ω (closed) or ∞ (open). ② Oxidized/aged contacts: fluctuating 0 to tens of Ω, value changes when lightly tapped. ③ Use clamp meter on compressor inrush — repeated ON-OFF every 1–3 s within one cycle indicates chattering. ④ Inspect thermostat: check capillary bulb placement (off-position causes malfunction), inspect case for moisture and rust.
What to do: Fix: ① If chattering confirmed, replace the thermostat (oxidized contacts are hard to clean and recur quickly). Match model or compatible spec (bulb length, range, differential). ② Temporary mitigation: if external anti-short-cycle timer exists, set off-time to 5 min for minimum protection. ③ Reposition capillary bulb in airflow, not in direct coil contact. ④ Upgrade to a digital controller recommended (better precision, reliability, data logging).
Digital controller — sensor cable noise or poor grounding
Check: Check: ① Display temperature swings ±0.5°C or more frequently in short time → suspect sensor signal noise. ② Sensor cable routing — running parallel to compressor power lines or inverter outputs induces magnetic noise. ③ Verify shielded cable, with shield grounded only at the controller end (grounding both ends creates a ground loop). ④ Controller chassis ground — ground resistance ≥10Ω means high noise impact.
What to do: Fix: ① Separate sensor cable from power runs (≥30 cm distance, different cable tray). ② Replace with shielded cable, ground shield at one point (controller end). ③ Improve controller grounding (larger conductor, dedicated ground rod, target resistance <4Ω). ④ Add EMI filter at controller input. ⑤ Enable measurement averaging or stronger hysteresis on the controller if available — blocks overly fast ON-OFF response.
Mechanical thermostats average 5–7 years of life. After 7+ years, suspect thermostat aging first when short cycling appears. With digital controllers, noise is the primary cause; check cabling and grounding first.
