Short cycling — contactor or relay coil chatter
Likely causes
Insufficient coil voltage — pulls in then can't hold
Check: Measure: ① AC voltage across the coil terminals. Normal is within ±10% of nameplate (e.g., 207–253V on a 230V coil). ② Measure at the moment compressor starts — inrush current drops circuit voltage; if coil drops below nameplate −15% it pulls in but can't hold → contact partial release → voltage recovers → re-pull-in → chatter. ③ Causes: undersized transformer, undersized wiring, aged run capacitor (PSC motors), shared circuit with another load.
What to do: Fix: ① Verify transformer capacity — load ≤80% of rating; replace if undersized. ② Recompute wire size by distance/current per IEC/NEC tables, voltage drop ≤5%. ③ Separate circuits — keep compressor power and control circuits separate. ④ Replace the coil — multi-year use can drift insulation/impedance. ⑤ Inverter compressor systems have almost no inrush, so chatter rarely occurs there.
Coil itself faulty or broken shading (shorted) ring
Check: Check: ① Listen and feel — a healthy coil hums faintly at 60/50 Hz. A 'wzz-wzz' buzz or beep tone indicates chattering or a broken shading ring. ② The shading ring is a copper loop embedded at the AC core ends; it generates a small phase-shifted flux to keep the armature pulled in through the 60/50 Hz zero crossing. Cracked or dislodged → release at zero crossing → 60/50 Hz buzz. ③ Coil insulation test (megger 500V, ≥1 MΩ normal).
What to do: Fix: ① A failed shading ring requires replacing the core assembly (no field repair); usually swap the whole contactor. ② Coil insulation <1 MΩ → replace the coil with same voltage/contact rating. ③ When handling coils, avoid condensation — installing right out of cold storage condenses moisture and reduces insulation. Allow ≥1 h at room temperature. ④ In high-vibration locations (near compressors) use vibration-absorbing mounts.
Coil chatter accelerates contact wear within 1–2 seconds (welding, arcing, oxidation) — left unchecked, contacts can weld stuck within days. Stop the system as soon as it's noticed and isolate the cause.
