Short cycling — frequent ON-OFF after defrost
Likely causes
Residual water on evaporator refreezes after defrost, fooling temperature sensor
Check: Check: ① measure when the evaporator fan restarts after defrost. Normal: 1–3 min drip time with fan off → water drains → then fan on. ② If drip time is too short or zero, water still on the coil refreezes when the fan blows on it → ice covers the sensor. ③ Result: sensor reads very cold → compressor cuts off → ice melts → sensor warms → compressor on → short cycle repeats.
What to do: Fix: ① Verify drip time setting on the controller — typical 1–3 min for medium-temp, 3–5 min for low-temp (≤−20°C). ② Confirm drip pan heater operates — prevents drip pan ice that backs water onto the coil. ③ Check fan-delay-on — fan should start only after the coil reaches an appropriate temperature (typically ≤−5°C) after compressor on. ④ Verify temperature sensor placement — should be in airflow, not glued to the coil surface.
Periodic short cycling after defrost — door openings, ambient swings, load surge
Check: Check: ① Log 30 min of data right after defrost (evap in/out temps, discharge pressure, compressor on/off durations). ② Inspect door-opening frequency — frequent opens on a walk-in dump warm air on the coil. ③ Compressor OFF time <3 min = short cycle suspect. Normal: 5–10 min off for small systems. ④ Verify differential setting — narrow differential triggers ON-OFF on tiny swings.
What to do: Fix: ① Widen differential — typical 2–3°C for medium-temp, 3–5°C for walk-ins. ② Set anti-short-cycle timer — block compressor restart for at least 3–5 min after off. ③ Door alarm and auto-closer — alert if walk-in door open >30 s. ④ Spread the load — large walk-ins use multiple evaporators with staggered defrost. ⑤ Inverter compressor — eliminates short cycling via variable operation.
Over 90% of post-defrost short cycling is insufficient drip time or missing fan-delay-on. Many controllers ship with 1 min or 0 min defaults — site tuning is essential. Inverter systems rarely turn the compressor off, so short cycling does not occur with them.
