Short cycling — low refrigerant charge causing low-pressure cutout/restart loop

How the low-pressure cutout creates short cycling
Check: Mechanism: Compressor ON → low charge lets the suction pressure drop quickly below the cutout setpoint (e.g., 1.0 bar on R-410A) → low-pressure switch trips → compressor OFF → pressures equalize (high side leaks back) → cut-in setpoint reached → compressor restarts → cuts out again quickly. Cycle length: typically 1–3 min ON / 30 s–1 min OFF.
What to do: Verify: ① low-side pressure — far below normal right after start (R-410A normal 5–7 bar; low charge ≤2 bar). ② Suction sweat disappears (normal suction line sweats). ③ Sight glass shows bubbles or intermittent bubbles. ④ Superheat very high (>15°C). ⑤ Verify the low-pressure switch itself — check correct setpoint (do NOT just lower the cutout to mask it; risks compressor damage).
Diagnose root cause — locate the leak and recharge
Check: Locate leak: ① External clues — oil traces (refrigerant carries oil) at flare fittings, service valves, solenoid valves, compressor terminal block. ② Electronic leak detector (halide/halogen, confirm R-32/R-410A compatibility). ③ Apply soap solution or leak-detection fluid; slow-growing bubbles mark the leak. ④ Inject UV dye and use a UV light — effective for recurring leaks.
What to do: Fix: ① Found leak → repair (rework flare/torque, replace service-valve packing, redo welds). ② Recover, evacuate to ≤500 micron with 30-min decay, then recharge. ③ Charging method: glide blends (R-407C, R-454B) require liquid charge; pure refrigerants (R-22, R-134a, R-32) accept vapor charge. Use nameplate or manufacturer charge spec, verify pressure and superheat. ④ No leak found → inject UV dye and revisit in 1–2 weeks. ⑤ Unrepairable leaks (inside a coil) → replace the component.
If short cycling + low charge: never just 'top off'. Without locating the leak, the system will be low again in days/weeks with more refrigerant loss (environmental and cost). Standard order: leak repair → evacuation → measured charge. EPA 608 prohibits topping off a known leaking system.
