Subcooling Fluctuation — Hunting/Instability Diagnosis
Likely causes
Natural fluctuation caused by condenser fan cycling
Check: Fan ON drops condensing pressure → subcooling temporarily down; Fan OFF raises pressure → subcooling up. 30 sec to 3 min cycle is normal. Common in low ambient (≤15°C). See discharge-fluctuate case.
What to do: 1) If normal operation, no further action — explain to customer. 2) If amplitude too large (±5°C or more), increase fan cycling differential. 3) Variable-speed fan (VFD) or head pressure control valve smooths condensing pressure. 4) Diagnose by average values — don't misjudge a single fluctuating moment as defect.
EEV/TXV hunting reflected on condensing side — whole-system instability
Check: When expansion valve (TXV/EEV) hunts, condensing-side pressure also fluctuates in sync, not just suction. 10–30 sec fast cycles. If superheat AND subcooling vary together, suspect expansion valve. See superheat-hunt case.
What to do: 1) Diagnose and repair expansion valve via superheat-hunt procedure. 2) For EEV, adjust PID (slower response). 3) If load swings are large, review EEV/TXV sizing. 4) Persistent hunting stresses both compressor and expansion valve — stabilize immediately.
Don't view subcooling fluctuation alone — track superheat, high-side, and low-side together (4 values). All 4 sync = expansion valve; only subcooling = condenser side; only superheat = evaporator side.
