Four-Way / Reversing Valve Coil Burnout (Mode Switching Fails)
A field reference for four-way reversing valve faults — what causes it, how to confirm it on the unit, how to repair it, and what fails next if you leave it. Written for working HVAC & refrigeration technicians.
How to confirm it on site
- Coil resistance: normal ~24Ω, ∞ (open) or 0Ω (short) = bad coil
- Magnet test: remove coil, hold strong magnet near slide → if slide moves, valve OK and coil is the fault
- Apply 24V → no hum / vibration on coil = coil is dead
- Insulation (megger): terminal-to-body <0.5MΩ suggests leakage to ground
- No hissing / refrigerant flow change at the moment of mode change command
Root causes
- Insulation aging / thermal degradation (years of use)
- Overvoltage / surge (lightning, unstable supply)
- Vibration fatigue at terminals
- Moisture ingress causing corrosion
- Wrong voltage applied (non-24V supply on 24V coil)
If you leave it unrepaired
- Solenoid coil open → 24V command but no magnetic field → pilot slide stays put
- Main slide locked in last position → mode change request ignored
- Heat pump: cold air in heating season / hot air in cooling season (stuck in previous mode)
- Defrost cycle cannot start → outdoor coil ices up → capacity drops sharply
- Long term: ice load triggers LP trip cycling → winding damage accelerates
How to fix it
- Replace coil only — no need to break the valve body (slide off via retainer nut, 5-min job)
- Verify 24V rating + retighten terminals to spec
- Inspect wiring insulation + add surge protector in lightning-prone area
- Match coil manufacturer (cross-reference Saginomiya/Ranco/Sanhua)
- Prevention: annual coil resistance + insulation test

What causes four-way / reversing valve coil burnout (mode switching fails)?
Insulation aging / thermal degradation (years of use) Overvoltage / surge (lightning, unstable supply) Vibration fatigue at terminals Moisture ingress causing corrosion Wrong voltage applied (non-24V supply on 24V coil)
How do I diagnose four-way / reversing valve coil burnout (mode switching fails) on site?

What happens if four-way / reversing valve coil burnout (mode switching fails) is left unrepaired?
Solenoid coil open → 24V command but no magnetic field → pilot slide stays put Main slide locked in last position → mode change request ignored Heat pump: cold air in heating season / hot air in cooling season (stuck in previous mode) Defrost cycle cannot start → outdoor coil ices up → capacity drops sharply Long term: ice load triggers LP trip cycling → winding damage accelerates
