Four-Way Valve Stuck in One Position (Mode Switch Fails)
A field reference for four-way reversing valve faults — what causes it, how to confirm it on the unit, how to repair it, and what fails next if you leave it. Written for working HVAC & refrigeration technicians.
How to confirm it on site
- No hiss / port temperature change at mode change command
- Coil OK (~24Ω, magnetic OK) but slide does not move
- Touch test: hot vs cold port should differ ≥ 50°F (25°C); stuck valve shows almost no difference
- Disconnect O/B wire — slide still does not move → fault is beyond the coil
- HP/LP gauges read normally during run but mode switching fails
Root causes
- Damaged slide lubrication (oil sludge / acid contamination)
- Insufficient pressure differential at startup (need HP-LP ≥ 100 psi / 7 bar)
- Internal debris / metal chips (post-burnout system)
- Slide corrosion (moisture ingress)
- Wrong refrigerant/pressure rating (R22 valve left in R410A retrofit)
If you leave it unrepaired
- On switch command, slide stays stuck at one end → main port flow direction unchanged
- Heat pump in heating season: cold air only / cooling season: hot air only
- 0% capacity or reverse-mode operation → frequent customer complaints
- Defrost cycle cannot start → outdoor coil ices up
- If left: repeated LP/HP trip cycling damages compressor windings
How to fix it
- Temporary: with system ON, shake a strong magnet near solenoid + tap valve body lightly with rubber mallet → sometimes frees
- Power OFF → wait 10 min for pressure equalize → restart (sometimes recovers as differential restores)
- Permanent: replace the valve body (braze in, with nitrogen purge, 8-hour vacuum, recharge)
- System cleanup: new filter-drier + acid test + oil change
- Prevention: wait 5 min after compressor stops before mode change (allow pressure equalize)

What causes four-way valve stuck in one position (mode switch fails)?
Damaged slide lubrication (oil sludge / acid contamination) Insufficient pressure differential at startup (need HP-LP ≥ 100 psi / 7 bar) Internal debris / metal chips (post-burnout system) Slide corrosion (moisture ingress) Wrong refrigerant/pressure rating (R22 valve left in R410A retrofit)
How do I diagnose four-way valve stuck in one position (mode switch fails) on site?

What happens if four-way valve stuck in one position (mode switch fails) is left unrepaired?
On switch command, slide stays stuck at one end → main port flow direction unchanged Heat pump in heating season: cold air only / cooling season: hot air only 0% capacity or reverse-mode operation → frequent customer complaints Defrost cycle cannot start → outdoor coil ices up If left: repeated LP/HP trip cycling damages compressor windings
