How to confirm it on site
- Touch test (clamp thermometer): same-side ports normal ≤ 3°C / 5°F; leakage ≥ 5°C / 10°F
- Measure location: ≥ 5 inches (13 cm) from valve body to avoid valve heat soak
- Discharge pressure below normal, suction pressure above normal
- Discharge temp abnormally high (hot gas mixed into suction → compressor inlet hot)
- Sight glass clear and charge correct but capacity degraded
Root causes
- Teflon seat aging / wear (years of operation)
- Slide surface scratched by debris / metal chips
- System acid contamination (post-burnout residue)
- Liquid slug shock during charging / recovery
- Inferior gasket material (low-cost replacement parts)
If you leave it unrepaired
- Teflon seat wears → hot gas leaks past slide-to-seat interface
- Discharge hot gas leaks into suction line → HP ↓ + LP ↑
- Cooling/heating capacity gradually drops 10~30%
- Discharge temp rises (normal 160–195°F / 70–90°C → >212°F / 100°C) → oil carbonization
- If left: compressor burnout risk + accelerated insulation degradation
How to fix it
- Internal leak: only valve replacement is permanent fix — seat/slide not field-serviceable
- Replacement: recover refrigerant → braze in under N2 purge → 8-hour vacuum → recharge
- Inspect simultaneously: compressor oil acid test, discharge-temp normalization, recheck suction superheat
- Replace filter-drier (remove acid residue)
- Prevention: avoid liquid slug during charging, periodic touch test for early detection
