Air-Cooled Condenser Fin Damage — Reduced Airflow

Likely causes

More than 30% of airflow cross-section blocked by bent/collapsed fins

Check: Visually inspect condenser face for fin damage over 30% of area. Measure face velocity at 4–6 points with anemometer — drop of more than 2.0 m/s vs design indicates severe blockage.

What to do: 1) De-energize and apply LOTO 2) Use fin comb sized to FPI, brush top-to-bottom along fin direction 3) For severe areas, use fin straightener for local restoration 4) Re-measure face velocity — target 85% of baseline.

Physical impact or foreign material (leaves, plastic) lodged in fins

Check: Inspect debris (leaves, plastic, dust) within 2 m radius. Use flashlight as backlight to spot objects lodged between fins by their shadow.

What to do: 1) Stop fan/compressor with LOTO 2) Remove large debris with tweezers/pliers 3) Use low-pressure air (<4 bar) or industrial vacuum, direct airflow inside-to-outside 4) Do NOT use high-pressure water (>3 bar) — it deforms fins 5) Consider installing protective mesh (10–12 mm).

Fins misaligned after high-pressure water cleaning

Check: Check previous cleaning history. If fins collapsed in a uniform direction, cleaning pressure is the cause. Interview cleaning crew or check equipment records (high-pressure gun).

What to do: 1) Restore with fin straightener (use tip matching FPI) 2) Re-apply epoxy spray (corrosion-resistant coating) on damaged coating 3) Establish cleaning standards: water pressure ≤3 bar, nozzle distance ≥30 cm, spray parallel to fin direction 4) Use dedicated alkaline coil cleaner (pH 10–11).

Fin tips corroded and broken in salt-air environments

Check: Check for broken fin tips or white aluminum oxide deposits. If site is within 10 km of coast or has chloride exposure, confirm cause. Pencil hardness test on coil — below HB indicates corrosion progression.

What to do: 1) Rinse salt with clean water (distilled preferred) and dry 2) Use neutral to mild alkaline coil cleaner (pH 7–9) — never acidic 3) Re-coat with epoxy or Heresite coating 4) If severe, replace with corrosion-resistant coil (E-coat/Blue Fin) 5) Establish 6-month clean-water rinse program.

Concentrated fin damage on suction side due to condenser fan reverse rotation

Check: Verify fan rotation direction: drop a sheet of paper on top to see suction direction — should be intake face to discharge face. Use phase rotation tester on 3-phase supply. Damage concentrated only on suction side is definitive proof of reverse rotation.

What to do: 1) Swap any two of the three phase conductors → reverses rotation 2) After confirming correct rotation, restore fins with fin comb 3) On VFD, reset rotation-direction parameter (refer to manufacturer manual) 4) Install permanent arrow sticker showing correct rotation direction after re-wiring.

Field tip

Emergency fix without fin comb: slide a thick card (business card) between fins to open gaps. Temporary measure only.
