Scroll Tip Seal Wear — Volumetric Efficiency Loss and Reduced Cooling Capacity
Likely causes
Tip seal (PTFE) thickness reduced — new 1.2 mm → replace at 0.6 mm or below
Check: Discharge temp below normal (normal: 90~110°C; worn: below 70°C) — evidence of high-side backflow. Reduced compression ratio: suction not dropping, discharge not rising. Cooling capacity 15~30% lower vs same conditions
What to do: Disassemble compressor → measure tip seal thickness with calipers → replace if ≤0.6 mm. Non-overhaulable models: replace entire compressor
Insufficient or degraded refrigeration oil → tip seal lubrication film lost — dry running
Check: Check oil level via sight glass (crankcase: 1/4~3/4 is normal). Take oil sample → analyze viscosity, acidity, moisture (black oil = carbonized)
What to do: Change oil (use manufacturer-specified refrigeration oil, follow ISO viscosity grade) → eliminate liquid slugging cause → re-check oil level before start
Tip seal wear progresses gradually — early stages show minimal current/pressure changes, making detection late. Annual comparison of discharge temperature records is key to early detection.
