Coastal Copper Pipe Galvanic Corrosion — Aluminum Fin Contact
Likely causes
Copper pipe and aluminum fin direct contact + seawater (NaCl) moisture → galvanic cell formation
Check: Locate corrosion — find blue-green oxide or pinholes at fin-pipe contact areas; confirm if installation is within 1km of coast
What to do: Replace all corroded copper pipe sections → wrap EPDM tape at fin coil contact points → apply acrylic anti-rust spray to entire pipe exterior (reapply annually); consider stainless steel pipe for new coastal installations
Fin protective coating peeled off — exposed metal accelerates corrosion
Check: Visually inspect fin coating condition — peeled areas, discoloration, corrosion spots; check rainwater drainage (outdoor unit tilt 3–5° forward)
What to do: Apply gold-fin coating spray to repair damaged coating areas; ensure rainwater drainage (tilt unit 3–5° forward); routine annual anti-corrosion inspection
For installations within 1km of coast, epoxy-coated fin coils are recommended — fin coating is the primary defense against galvanic corrosion
