Cold Storage / Freezer Temperature Rising

Likely causes

Dirty condenser coil — poor heat rejection due to dust and grease buildup

Check: Visually inspect condenser fins for blockage; check high-side gauge — more than 10% above design pressure indicates fouling

What to do: Clean condenser coil at least twice per year — vacuum dust, then low-pressure water wash (3–5 bar), fully dry before restart

Refrigerant leak or low charge

Check: Check low-side gauge — suction pressure 20%+ below design indicates low charge. Use electronic leak detector on flanges and solder joints

What to do: Apply soapy water → locate leak by bubbles, then weld or replace part. Recover refrigerant → evacuate to ≤500 microns → recharge by weight

Evaporator coil heavily frosted — defrost heater, timer, or sensor failure

Check: Visually inspect evaporator — thick ice layer on coil. Manually advance defrost timer to verify heater energizes

What to do: 1) First: force-defrost with 3 kW heat gun or steam gun for 30–60 min — emergency action to prevent product loss. 2) Measure defrost heater resistance (ohmmeter) → replace if open. 3) Check and replace defrost thermostat (trips at 45–60°C). 4) Check and replace timer or demand defrost control board

Damaged door gasket — warm air infiltration

Check: Paper slip test — insert A4 paper in seal and close door; if it slides out without resistance, gasket is faulty. Check all 8 points (4 corners + 4 mid-edges)

What to do: Replace gasket — use silicone rated to −40°C for freezer environments. If hinge sag >0.5 mm is present, align door within 0.3 mm using hinge set screws before fitting new gasket. Replacement interval: 5–7 yr freezer, 7–10 yr cooler

Frequent or incomplete door closure

Check: Check door hinge and latch operation. Verify air curtain or strip curtain is installed

What to do: Readjust door hinges and latches. Install air curtain or strip curtain to minimize warm air entry. During work, use thermal blankets or tarps to limit cold air loss

Overloading — airflow blocked in front of evaporator fan

Check: Check storage arrangement in front of evaporator fan — items within 30 cm of fan will impede cold air circulation

What to do: Maintain at least 30 cm clearance in front of evaporator fan. Ensure adequate spacing between stored items for cold air circulation. Confirm temperature recovery to 0–5°C (cooler) or ≤-18°C (freezer)

Keep a temperature log — most effective early warning tool. Target: freezer ≤-18°C, cooler 0–5°C. Product loss is direct financial loss — identify and act on temperature alarms immediately.
