Freezer Floor Heating Cable Break → Floor Frost Heave
Likely causes
Repeated forklift loading (3–5 t) cracks insulation, causing wire break
Check: Measure cable insulation resistance with megohmmeter — below 1 MΩ indicates cable damage in that zone. Thermal camera scan on floor: cold spot within heated zone pinpoints break
What to do: Locate fault using TDR. Replace with embedded cable rated 40–60 W/m; seal all junctions with heat-shrink waterproof sleeves. Prevention: designate cable-free lanes for forklift paths or embed steel conduit
Poor waterproofing at junction — moisture ingress lowers insulation resistance, causing ground fault
Check: Check GFCI breaker trip history. Visually inspect junction connectors — condensation or corrosion marks
What to do: Remove faulty junction, redo with heat-shrink waterproof sleeve. All junctions must have double waterproofing
Thermostat failure — heater does not activate even after floor reaches set point (−5 °C)
Check: Check thermostat setting value. Verify floor sensor is not positioned directly on top of cable (can cause false readings). Apply direct power to heater (bypass thermostat) to verify heat output
What to do: Replace thermostat. Relocate floor sensor to midpoint between cables. After power restore, allow approx. 24 h of heating per 10 cm of frost depth for full thaw
No TDR? Use thermal camera on floor — cold spot in heated zone pinpoints the break. Stop forklift operation immediately upon discovering frost heave — entering heaved floor risks additional cable damage and forklift tip-over.
