Door Gasket Hardening & Shrinkage → Cold Air Leakage (External Condensation Worsening)
Likely causes
Gasket rubber aging — loss of elasticity and sealing force after 5–8 years
Check: Paper slip test at 8 points (4 corners + 4 mid-edges): if paper slides out without resistance, gasket replacement is needed
What to do: Replace with same spec (magnetic or standard) gasket rated for −40°C silicone. Replacement interval: 5–7 years freezer (≤-18°C), 7–10 years cooler (0–5°C)
Repeated low-temperature exposure — gasket shrinks and hardens below −25°C; cannot recover when door closes
Check: Heat gun test at 60°C for 30 s — if gasket recovers shape it can remain temporarily; if not, replace immediately
What to do: Replace gasket. Wipe door frame condensation dry, degrease gasket seating surface with IPA, then reseat
Door hinge sag — door drops 0.5 mm+, preventing uniform gasket compression
Check: Check uniform gasket compression at top and bottom of closed door. Check hinge wear and loose screws
What to do: Use hinge set screws to align door within 0.3 mm horizontally and vertically, then verify gasket compression
Run paper slip test at 8 points (4 corners + 4 mid-edges) — one failure means replace the entire gasket. Recommended preventive replacement: every 5–7 years for freezer (≤-18°C), 7–10 years for cooler (0–5°C).
