Discharge Pipe Resonance Fracture — Excessive Support Spacing

Likely causes

Support spacing exceeds 1.5m — vibration load concentrated on copper pipe

Check: Measure actual support spacing — 1/2" copper: exceed 1.0m threshold; 3/4" and above: exceed 1.2m threshold; fracture typically within 30mm downstream of bracket

What to do: Readjust support spacing (1/2" → 1.0m, 3/4"+ → 1.2m); replace fractured copper pipe, nitrogen test at 600kPa for 24h; touch pipe during startup to verify vibration is resolved

No flexible joint installed near compressor — vibration transmitted directly to piping

Check: Check if flexible hose is installed within 300mm of compressor discharge; if absent, verify that vibration transmits throughout discharge line

What to do: Install flexible hose within 300mm of compressor discharge outlet; replace brackets with anti-vibration clamps with rubber inserts

Field tip

Systems with fracture history: recheck all supports 3 months after restart; fatigue fractures show characteristic beach marks (clam shell pattern) on the fracture surface
