Missing Oil Trap on Vertical Riser — Oil Accumulation

Likely causes

No oil trap at vertical riser base — oil cannot rise at low velocity

Check: Check compressor oil level drop + foaming in sight glass; measure suction line velocity (below 4 m/s oil cannot rise); inspect vertical section pipe configuration

What to do: Install U-shape oil trap at vertical riser base — same pipe diameter, 300 mm depth; add intermediate trap for every 3 m of rise; top up oil and resume operation

Insufficient refrigerant velocity (below 4 m/s) — partial-load operation

Check: Verify suction line velocity 4–8 m/s at full load; minimum 3.5 m/s at low load; check for oversized piping

What to do: If oversized, reduce pipe one size to restore velocity; add oil separator to improve oil return rate

Field tip

One oil trap per 3 m of vertical riser; trap depth equals pipe diameter (minimum 150 mm)
