Open-Drive Compressor Coupling Misalignment — Radial and Angular Offset
Likely causes
Installed without dial gauge → alignment errors from visual only, soft foot not corrected
Check: Measure radial offset with DTI — allowable: ≤ 0.05mm. Angular: ≤ 0.05mm per 100mm. Soft foot: loosen one diagonal bolt — if gauge changes > 0.05mm, shim correction needed
What to do: Correct soft foot with shims, then remeasure → adjust to within DTI spec → after final tightening, hand-turn coupling — no resistance = aligned. No laser aligner: use straight edge + feeler gauge to achieve 0.05mm accuracy
Coupling spider worn or broken — unable to absorb shock, vibration and noise increase
Check: Measure coupling spider hardness — replace if below Shore A 60 or if visible cracks/deformation. Recommend annual inspection
What to do: Replace spider (annually or when Shore A < 60) → re-verify alignment after replacement → re-measure after operating temperature reached for thermal expansion compensation
No laser aligner? The straight edge + feeler gauge (STR) method can achieve 0.05mm accuracy. Always re-measure at operating temperature after alignment — thermal expansion changes the offset.
