Receiver Safety Relief Valve Leakage
Likely causes
Excessive high-side pressure (above set point) → seat damaged after normal relief valve activation
Check: Check refrigerant odor or frost around relief valve discharge + use electronic leak detector to measure leakage
What to do: Recover refrigerant and replace relief valve (not repairable) → confirm correct set pressure (R-22: 2.45 MPa, R-410A: 4.15 MPa)
Foreign matter on valve seat preventing complete closure
Check: Check valve activation history (whether leakage continues after cooling) → confirm continuous leak with electronic detector
What to do: Prioritize replacement for any valve with activation history — not repairable. Simultaneously investigate root cause of high pressure (condenser fouling, fan failure, overcharge)
Valve spring fatigue from aging or repeated cycling → leakage at pressure below set point
Check: Check installation year and activation log — preventive replacement recommended if >5 years old or >3 activation events
What to do: Recover refrigerant and replace valve → verify discharge pipe is open (remove caps/plugs) → resolve high-pressure root cause
Once a relief valve has opened, it often fails to reseal properly. If it has activated before, prioritize replacement. Replacing the valve without fixing the high-pressure root cause will lead to recurrence.
