Receiver Tank Overcharge
Likely causes
Refrigerant charged beyond specified amount — charge log not verified, scale not used
Check: Check receiver liquid level sight glass — level above 70% indicates overcharge. Also check condensing pressure and subcooling
What to do: Recover refrigerant 100 g at a time → wait 5 min → recheck receiver level and subcooling → stop when 50–70% reached
Seasonal temperature drop lowers condensing temperature → excess liquid accumulation on high side
Check: Check condensing saturation temperature vs. ambient — if condensing superheat <5°C, suspect overcharge
What to do: Recover refrigerant 100 g at a time → verify subcooling is 5–8°C → adjust to receiver level 50–70%
Condenser fan over-running at low ambient → excessive subcooling mistaken for low charge → unnecessary extra charge
Check: Measure subcooling: if >10°C while normal is 5–8°C, check fan inverter settings for over-running
What to do: Adjust fan inverter settings (reduce fan speed at low ambient) → verify subcooling 5–8°C and recover refrigerant if still excess
Optimal receiver level: 50–70%. Above 80%, rising temperature or load changes may trigger the relief valve. Always use a scale when charging.
