Service Valve Schrader Core Leakage — Gas Release When Connecting Gauges
Likely causes
Schrader core rubber seal hardened or cracked
Check: Remove Schrader cap and visually inspect core (rubber seal cracks, discoloration, hardening); check for leakage around core with gas detector or soapy water
What to do: Turn service valve to fully closed position → remove and replace core with Schrader core tool (refrigeration-grade core) → tighten: hand-tight plus 1/8~1/4 turn (do not over-tighten) → recheck for leakage → install Schrader cap
Gauge hose quick-coupler not locked before opening valve
Check: Confirm quick-coupler lock when connecting gauge hose (click sound or fully screwed); check core thread wear from repeated connect/disconnect cycles
What to do: After core replacement, strictly manage cap — Schrader cap acts as secondary seal; replace immediately if lost; less experienced technicians need field training on locking quick-coupler before opening valve
The Schrader cap is not just a dust cover — it acts as a secondary seal. Leaving it missing significantly shortens core seal life. Always replace the cap.
