Winter Basin Freezing — Heater Failure
Likely causes
Heater element burnout — repeated overheating or exposed to air due to low water level
Check: Measure heater resistance with multimeter — OL (open circuit) or check against rated value (typically 10–50Ω); check water level sensor first
What to do: Confirm water level sensor is OK, then replace heater → remove heater scale (4% citric acid 3 h soak) before replacement → inspect make-up water valve
Thermostat failure — no activation even below set temperature (typically 5°C)
Check: Verify thermostat setpoint and operation — test ON in ice water (0°C), OFF in warm water (10°C)
What to do: Replace thermostat → if frozen, thaw gradually with warm water or heat gun (no open flame) → complete drainage recommended for long winter shutdowns
Heater burnout usually follows: low water level → air exposure → overheating. Always check the water level sensor before replacing the heater, or the new one will burn out too.
