Reefer Truck Fails to Reach Setpoint During Driving

Likely causes

Low refrigerant — vibration causes cumulative micro-leaks at flare and hose fittings

Check: Run unit 15 min, connect manifold — R-404A normal: low 2.0–2.5 bar, high 14–18 bar. Below 1.5 bar = low. Continuous bubbles in sight glass and light frost on suction after TXV = undercharge. Look for oil stains at hose fittings (refrigerant oil marks leaks)

What to do: Scan all flare joints, service ports, and hose fittings with electronic leak detector; confirm with leak spray. For flare leaks, re-torque nuts (typically 35–40 N·m) or rework flare; replace hose if corroded. After repair, full recovery → evacuate ≤500 micron for 30 min → weigh in exact nameplate charge

Condenser coil fouling — road dust, insects, oil buildup reducing heat rejection 30–40%

Check: Visually inspect condenser — dust/insect cakes between grille fins, bent fins. High pressure rising during operation (R-404A >20 bar nearly confirms fouling). Coil surface feels warm rather than hot. Check grille drain for clogging

What to do: Pressure-wash (≤20 bar) from the back side outward — reversing direction pushes contamination deeper. Heavy oil: apply alkaline cleaner, dwell 10 min, rinse. Use fin comb on bent fins. Clean condenser fan at same time

Low engine RPM — compressor capacity drops in city traffic idle

Check: Measure engine idle RPM while reefer runs (must stay ≥1,000 RPM). Check throttle-up solenoid operation (RPM should rise when reefer engages). Idle ≤700 = insufficient cooling

What to do: Check throttle-up solenoid voltage/operation; replace if faulty, inspect linkage. Adjust idle set screw to 800–1,000 RPM. If engine condition is poor (fuel/air filter), service separately. For routes with heavy traffic, pre-cool during highway segments

Drive belt slipping or loose — Carrier/Thermo King direct-drive belt

Check: Engine off, key OFF, disconnect battery negative, press belt mid-span with thumb — 10–15mm deflection normal (>20mm = loose). Check belt for glazing/cracks/fraying; black dust or rubber debris on pulleys = slipping

What to do: Adjust tensioner for 10–15mm deflection. Replace belt if glazed/cracked (same spec; for twin V-belts, always replace in sets). Check pulley alignment with straightedge; if misaligned, inspect bearings as well

TXV superheat mis-set — refrigerant flow wrong

Check: SH = evaporator outlet pipe temp (clamp thermometer) minus low-side saturation temp. Target 5–8°C. >10°C = TXV starving, <3°C = over-feeding. Verify bulb location (12 o'clock on horizontal suction line after evaporator, fully insulated)

What to do: Turn TXV adjustment screw — clockwise tightens (higher SH), counterclockwise loosens. Adjust in 1/4-turn steps, wait 15 min to stabilize, remeasure. Target 5–8°C. If adjustment has no effect, replace TXV assembly

Field tip

If temperature won't hold even cruising at 80–90 km/h on the highway, #1 suspect is condenser fouling, #2 is low refrigerant. Touching the coil by hand: warm, not hot, confirms fouling. Bad cargo-box door seal is surprisingly common — if setpoint can't be reached, also inspect door gasket.
