Cargo Box Insulation Degradation — K-value Rise
Likely causes
Polyurethane foam moisture absorption — increased thermal conductivity
Check: Measure inner/outer wall temperature differential and calculate actual K-value — consider replacement if 20%+ above design; suspect moisture if floor interior is 5°C+ above ambient
What to do: Re-seal all panel joints and corners with silicone or butyl tape → identify damaged panels with thermal imaging camera and replace partially → clean floor drains
Panel joint seal failure — water ingress
Check: Visually inspect all panel joints — check for silicone cracking, detachment, or discoloration
What to do: Remove existing sealant, apply primer → fill with new silicone → waterproofing test after 24-hour cure
Long-term aging or physical impact damage to insulation
Check: Cargo box 10+ years old or vehicle with collision history — scan all panel temperature distribution with infrared thermal camera
What to do: If full replacement not feasible, reinforce with reflective insulation sheets (aluminum) inside → partially replace damaged sections → re-measure K-value to verify effect
Run empty box for 1 hour, then shoot exterior skin temperature with infrared camera — temperature blotches indicate areas of moisture absorption or damage.
