Defrost Water Drainage Blockage
Likely causes
Drain heater break — drainage pipe frozen and blocked
Check: Measure drain heater resistance — calculate based on 20W/m rating; open circuit = break; check drain pan for ice
What to do: Replace drain heater; thaw drain pan and drainage with hot water before restarting
Drain pipe slope insufficient or clogged
Check: Check drain pipe slope — minimum 1/50 (2%) required; visually inspect for hose kinks and blockage; observe drainage flow during defrost
What to do: Re-route pipe to ensure slope; replace kinked section; flush blocked section with acid cleaner
Scale/slime accumulation in drain pan
Check: Visually inspect drain pan — check scale/slime thickness; if defrost water pools and overflows in pan = blockage confirmed
What to do: Remove and clean drain pan with acid cleaner; clear drain hole with thin wire; confirm minimum 4 times/day 30-min defrost
Drain blockage = heater break (50%) + slope failure (30%) + scale (20%) — inspect in this order; verify drain heater operation by checking drain pan warmth during defrost
