Ethylene Buildup in Meal Kit/Produce Warehouse — Over-Ripening Due to Ventilation Failure
Likely causes
Ventilation fan inverter failure or motor burnout — fresh air supply stopped
Check: Check inverter operating current and trip code + measure fan motor insulation resistance (normal: ≥1MΩ)
What to do: 1. Fix inverter trip cause then restart 2. Replace motor if insulation is degraded 3. Temporary: open manual ventilation openings for emergency ventilation
Ethylene sensor (ppm-level detection) malfunction or wiring fault — no alarm triggered
Check: Test sensor response with standard ethylene gas (1 ppm standard) → replace if no response or response value deviates by more than 0.5 ppm
What to do: 1. Replace sensor (same specification electrochemical ethylene sensor) 2. Check and repair wire breaks or loose connections 3. After replacement, verify alarm trigger with 1 ppm standard gas
Outside air damper actuator seized — damper stuck closed, blocking fresh air
Check: Check damper control signal voltage + manually operate damper to check movement → if no movement with manual operation, actuator seized
What to do: 1. Replace actuator (same torque and voltage specification) 2. Lubricate damper rail and blades (silicone-based lubricant) 3. After replacement, verify 0~100% travel operation
Mixed storage of ethylene-producing items (apples, bananas, tomatoes) with sensitive items (strawberries, broccoli)
Check: Check for mixed product types in storage zones + measure ethylene concentration in each zone → identify zones above 0.5 ppm
What to do: 1. Separate ethylene-producing items from sensitive items into different zones or storage rooms 2. Install additional ethylene adsorption filters (activated carbon + KMnO4) 3. Improve storage zone layout — post separation guidelines on-site
Ventilation control timer misconfigured — interval ventilation has stopped
Check: Check PLC or timer relay settings — compare ventilation interval (recommended: 15 min on per hour) against actual operation history log
What to do: 1. Reprogram timer: force ventilation interlock to have priority when ethylene exceeds 0.5 ppm 2. Set weekly review of operation log 3. Replace timer backup battery — prevent setting reset
At 0.5ppm ethylene, strawberries and kiwis over-ripen within one day. Keep ethylene sensor alarm threshold at 0.5ppm or below.
