Excessive Defrost Frequency
Likely causes
Low refrigerant charge
Check: outdoor coil temperature too low, accelerating frost buildup
What to do: Check refrigerant charge — verify low-side operating pressure and suction superheat (target low-side ~0.5–0.6 MPa for R-410A at 0°C outdoor)
Outdoor fan motor failure or broken fan blade
Check: reduced airflow causes rapid coil frosting
What to do: Measure outdoor fan current and RPM, visually inspect fan blade, replace if abnormal
Blocked airflow around outdoor unit (obstacles, snow accumulation, etc.)
Check: Inspect with instruments or visually
What to do: Clean around outdoor unit and ensure adequate clearance (minimum 300mm sides, 1m+ open above)
Defrost initiation temperature set too high (e.g., set at -1°C, correct range -5 to -8°C)
Check: Inspect with instruments or visually
What to do: Lower defrost initiation temperature parameter (reset to -5 to -8°C)
Very high humidity in intake air environment (near swimming pool, laundry, kitchen)
Check: Inspect with instruments or visually
What to do: Increase EEV superheat setting (target superheat 5–8K)
Check defrost log: in service mode read cumulative 'defrost count' over 24 hours — normal is 4–8 times/day; investigate root cause if 10+ times.
