Hot Gas Defrost 4-Way Valve Fails to Shift → No Defrost
Likely causes
4-way valve coil open-circuit or grounded short
Check: Measure coil resistance with multimeter: 24V coil 100–300Ω, 220V coil 1,500–3,000Ω
What to do: Replace coil if out of range → reapply defrost signal and verify valve shifts
Valve slider seized — debris or sludge deposits causing mechanical lock
Check: Listen at valve piping during defrost signal — no click sound indicates slider seizure
What to do: While defrost signal is applied, tap valve body with rubber mallet to free slider → replace valve if unsuccessful
Defrost control panel relay no output — timer/controller output port failure
Check: Measure voltage at controller output terminal at defrost start — no 24V or 220V means relay or controller defective
What to do: Measure relay contact resistance (<1Ω normal, >10Ω defective) → replace relay if bad → replace controller if output port itself is faulty
Field quick check: apply 24V or 220V directly to valve coil port → verify switching sound within 30 seconds. Distinguishes coil failure from valve body seizure.
