R-134a refrigerant handling — medium-temp & automotive (A1)
Likely causes
Use — automotive A/C, medium-temp refrigeration, chillers. Replaced R-12 (CFC) from the 1990s
Check: Safety class A1 — non-flammable, low toxicity. High GWP 1430, so recovery/reclaim is mandatory
What to do: Oil by application — POE for stationary refrigeration, PAG for automotive A/C. Not a drop-in for R-12 — flush oil, replace seals, then charge to 80–90% of nameplate
Field tip
R-134a is A1 (safe to handle) but high-GWP (1430) — never vent to atmosphere; always recover with a recovery machine.
